The story of our unique ‘hippy chairs’ at OKU Ibiza, supporting the artisans of Papua New Guinea…
At OKU Ibiza, you’ll find our treasured hippy chairs dotted around the comfortable lounge areas throughout the hotel – feel free to grab a seat! Supporting craftsmen in underdeveloped regions of Papua New Guinea, the chairs have been individually-crafted using centuries-old weaving techniques that are passed down from generation to generation. Each chair is completely unique, with every artisan conceiving their own unique imaginative design, through subtle changes in pattern and colour meaning that no two chairs are the same.
A single chair takes around six weeks to complete, from collecting the materials in the forest by hand, to hand weaving each row delicately from these completely natural fibres. These pieces of furniture are a rare glimpse into an elegant and traditional craft.
The financial stability this offers the craftsmen helps them to send their children to school and support the economy within their community for infrastructure and other essentials. Our chairs were created in collaboration with Considered by Real, who provide these opportunities to under-developed communities across the world. They strive to preserve, showcase and celebrate specialised craftsmen through ethical and sustainable value chains, and bringing them financial empowerment.
