1. Hike to the top of Mount Dikaios

The hiking trail to the 846-metre Khristos peak starts from the village of Zia. The steep climb will take about two hours, but the views are worth the effort. A white-washed chapel crowns the top along with panoramic views across to Turkey and the Greek Dodecanese isles.

Brave the bumpy dirt track that winds among the hills. At their foot lies a small beach that can’t be seen from the road. Walk to the end and wade through the waves until you’ve reached the white-sand cove. You’ll feel like you have the whole island to yourself.

5. Hike to the top of the old castle ruin in Pyli

The remnants of a Byzantine castle rise from a cliff above an abandoned settlement. Many of the stone buildings are crumbling ruins but there are still frescoes to be admired in its ancient churches.
